The one network call is looking up a barcode you haven't scanned before, and that's opt-in: you're asked the first time, and there's a kill switch in Settings. Scan results cache on-device, so re-scanning something you already own works with the grid down.
Yes. Log a batch as one item with the jar count, the storage location, and a use-by date, and the reminder fires before it ages out so last year's jars go first. Smart grouping keeps "Tomato Sauce x12" as one card instead of twelve rows, and jars, lids, rings, pectin, and canning salt track as their own supplies.
